The Effectiveness of Extracurricular Arts Development Strategies in Public and Private Elementary Schools: A Comparative Study between SDN 005 and SDS Muhammadiyah Kabil

Abstract

This study aims to analyze and compare the effectiveness of arts extracurricular development strategies at SDN 005 Kabil and SDS Muhammadiyah Kabil, Batam City. The research employed a mixed-methods approach using an explanatory sequential design. Data were collected through observation, interviews, documentation, and questionnaires distributed to 60 students participating in arts extracurricular activities. The informants consisted of school principals, extracurricular coordinators, and arts instructors from both schools. Quantitative data were analyzed using an independent sample t-test, while qualitative data were analyzed through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that SDN 005 demonstrated higher effectiveness in extracurricular arts development than SDS Muhammadiyah Kabil. The advantages were reflected in structured curricula, professional instructors, consistent training intensity, and flexible funding support. Meanwhile, SDS Muhammadiyah Kabil excelled in student accessibility but faced challenges related to training continuity and limited technical competence of instructors. This study recommends developing competency-based extracurricular curricula and strengthening collaboration with professional artists to improve the quality of arts extracurricular programs.
