Abstract

Community-Based Total Sanitation (STBM) is a program that promotes sanitation behavior change through community empowerment. Turi Hamlet declared 100% STBM achievement in 2019. However, community participation has not been evaluated since the declaration, and several sanitation issues remain. This study aimed to assess community participation in the STBM program following the declaration in Turi Hamlet, Bantul Regency, Indonesia. A descriptive survey design was employed, using a quantitative approach supported by qualitative data. The study involved 81 household heads selected through proportional random sampling from a population of 239 household heads. In-depth interviews were also conducted with eight informants selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using questionnaires and in-depth interviews. Quantitative data were analyzed using univariate analysis, while qualitative data were analyzed thematically. The results showed that community participation was categorized as very good across all five STBM pillars, with scores of 97% for ending open defecation, 91% for handwashing with soap, 90% for household drinking water and food management, 94% for household solid waste management, and 96% for household wastewater management. Community motivation was categorized as good, with a score of 100%. Interview findings indicated that household waste management, the equitable distribution of STBM education and outreach, and post-declaration monitoring by the community health center required further improvement. Therefore, strengthening community education and outreach and conducting regular monitoring are needed to support the sustainability of STBM implementation in Turi Hamlet.
