The Relationship Between Compliance with Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Use and the Incidence of Workplace Accidents in the Construction Department of PT X

Abstract

Occupational accidents in the construction sector remain high and are largely influenced by low compliance with the use of personal protective equipment (PPE). Data from PT. X indicate an increase in workplace accidents in the Construction Department during the period of 2022-2024. This study aims to determine the relationship between PPE compliance and the occurrence of occupational accidents. This study used a quantitative method with a cross-sectional design. A total of 96 respondents were selected using a consecutive sampling technique. Data were collected through questionnaires and company documentation, then analyzed using the Chi-Square test. The results showed that 59% of workers were compliant with PPE use, while 41% were non-compliant. As many as 66% of workers had never experienced occupational accidents, while 33% had experienced accidents. Statistical analysis showed a significant relationship between PPE compliance and occupational accidents (p-value = 0.004). In conclusion, there is a significant relationship between PPE compliance and occupational accidents. Workers who comply with PPE use have a lower risk of accidents. Therefore, increased supervision and training are needed to improve PPE compliance.
