Abstract

Pregnancy causes various physiological and hormonal changes that can increase a mother’s susceptibility to oral health problems, including dental caries and poor oral hygiene. This study employed an observational analytical design with a cross-sectional approach. The study sample consisted of 30 pregnant women with dental caries, selected using purposive sampling. Data on motivation for oral health maintenance were collected using a Guttman scale questionnaire, while oral hygiene status was measured using the Oral Hygiene Index-Simplified (OHI-S). Data were analyzed univariately and bivariately using the chi-square test with a significance level of α = 0.05. The results showed that the majority of respondents had low motivation for oral health maintenance (17 participants, 56.67%) and poor oral hygiene status (13 participants, 43.3%). The results of the bivariate analysis showed a p-value of 0.001 (p < 0.05), indicating a significant association between motivation for oral health maintenance and oral hygiene status. Respondents with low motivation tended to have a poor OHI-S status, whereas all respondents with high motivation had a good OHI-S status. It was concluded that motivation for oral health maintenance has a significant effect on oral hygiene status among pregnant women with dental caries at the Kedungdoro Community Health Center.
